Illinois SR-22 Insurance
Proof of Financial Responsibility
Illinois law requires all vehicles registered OR operated in this state to be covered by a liability insurance policy. Trailers are not required to have liability insurance.
Minimum Policy Coverage:
- $20,000 for injury or death to one person in one accident
- $40,000 for injury or death to two or more persons in one accident
- $15,000 for property damage for one person in one accident
What is Required of You:
- You must carry your insurance card in your vehicle at all times. (Your insurance company will mail you your insurance card.)
- Your insurance card must not be expired.
- You must present your insurance card when requested by a law enforcement officer. Failure to do so is considered to be driving without insurance.
Tickets For No Insurance:
- Conviction for no insurance will result in the Illinois Secretary of State suspending your driver's license.
- First-time offenders will lose their driving privileges until the $100 reinstatement fee is paid and proof of financial responsibility (i.e., an SR-22 certificate) is filed.
- Second and subsequent offenses will require a minimum four-month suspension.
- The Secretary of State uses a computer program to randomly check drivers for SR-22 insurance. Failure to respond to this inquiry will suspend your license.
- The minimum fine for driving without insurance is $500, and can increase to $1,000 for driving a vehicle with registration (i.e., plates) suspended for non-insurance.
Proof of Financial Responsibility:
- Persons who get tickets for no insurance must file proof of financial responsibility, called SR-22 insurance, with the Illinois Secretary of State.
- The Secretary of State will require proof of financial responsibility for one year.
- Failure to maintain proof of financial responsibility will result in suspension of your license.
